Synoptics Limited was founded in 1985 in Cambridge, UK. The Company’s initial objective was to commercialise some novel work in the field of image processing undertaken in the Engineering Department at the University of Cambridge and its first products were for electron microscopy applications.

In 1992, following a period of steady growth, Synoptics acquired the image analysis business of Ai Cambridge, UK in order to broaden its range of end-use products and develop its worldwide export markets. In 1995 it acquired Myriad Solutions, a manufacturer of graphics and accelerator products.
A large-scale development project, in part funded by a European Community “Esprit” project, produced a significant enhancement of the Company’s software technologies in 1996. The Image Objects (IO) product is a state-of-the-art set of software imaging components which is now used throughout the Company to deliver custom imaging solutions to its customers.
In 1997, the Syngene division was formed to exploit the Company’s experience in imaging DNA and protein gels. In the following year, the Company created two further divisions utilising expertise in the area of digital microscopy - Syncroscopy, and microbiology - Synbiosis. The formation of these distinct marketing divisions has led to the Company’s rapid growth.
Synoptics Ltd remains in Cambridge, UK and from here manages business across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Pacific Rim via a network of distributors and direct sales people. Synoptics Inc in Frederick, Maryland, USA provides a full range of sales, support and manufacturing services in North, Central and South America.
