Synoptics, a well-established, global leader in the development and manufacture of innovative digital imaging systems for scientific applications, is delighted to announce the expansion of the Division with the integration of Ionscope, a world-leading Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy (SICM) company. Ionscope’s technology and staff have now been successfully transferred to the Synoptics site in Cambridge, UK and is now fully operational there.

Ionscope was acquired by Synoptics (part of the Scientific Digital Imaging [SDI] group of companies) in January 2019 and now operates as a division at the Synoptics site in Cambridge, UK. Ionscope’s SICM technology is a rapidly emerging Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) technique which allows nanoscale topographical mapping of soft, delicate surfaces and enables precise positioning of a probe to a specific spot on a sample surface for further manipulations. Founded in 2004, Ionscope is a spin out from a successful research and development programme at top UK universities, Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge.

Synoptics has retained Dr Yi Zhou, as Ionscope’s Application Specialist and Yi will be responsible for ensuring Ionscope’s customer requirements are met. With Ionscope since 2014, Yi has been pivotal in ensuring Ionscope’s commercial success. Yi has been active in SICM research since 2009 and helps construct commercial SICM systems, providing her with an excellent insight into what scientists need and making her a key player in this field.

With Ionscope’s SICM systems installed in laboratories in Asia, North America and Europe, adding this technology to Synoptics’s established portfolio of imaging companies (Syngene, Synbiosis and Synoptics Health) will provide niche expertise in the microscopy field. The integration will also enhance Synoptics’s knowledge of researchers’ requirements for innovative imaging products in expanding markets.

Dr Yi Zhou, Application Specialist for Ionscope commented: “Ionscope is excited to be part of Synoptics as it provides us with access to a team of imaging and software experts. Having this infrastructure, expertise and support secures our future going forward. Additionally, being part of a larger AIM quoted company will allow Ionscope access to capital to help fund our development programmes, enabling us to continue innovating our unrivalled technology.”

Kate George, Sales and Technical Director at Synoptics added: “We are delighted to welcome such a high calibre company and staff into our Division. Dr Yi Zhou has a real understanding of SICM, and her pursuit of imaging excellence has helped position Ionscope as the world’s top SICM supplier. I believe that with Synoptics’s support and Yi’s eye for detail, Ionscope will continue producing world-beating SICM systems for many years to come.”
