Dr. Rositsa Ivanova and colleagues in Dr. Guy Moss’s group in University of College London recently published a new paper on ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, which is about using nanopipette on SICM as a toolbox to measure the airway surface liquid (ASL) and epithelial cell function in many different ways that were only possible with a range of instruments. By utilising the precise positioning and ion current feedback in SICM, they managed to measure trans-epithelial potential, ASL depth, Cilia beat frequency, ASL pH and spinnability, all on a single platform SICM (Ionscope) without any need for labelling. With such an approach, the studies on major diseases where ASL and/or mucociliary transport are affected can be accelerated, become more coherent and more informative.
